This 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang is a California black-plate example that has been with the seller for 42 years. Powered by a 289ci V8 mated to a 4-speed manual transmission, the car was purchased used by the seller’s father at West Valley Ford in Santa Clara, California in June 1964 for Father’s Day. It was signed over to the seller in 1975 and has since been repainted twice in its original Poppy Red. The interior has also been refreshed with numerous original parts according to the seller, and modifications are said to be limited to an aftermarket stereo and speakers. Approximately 74k miles were added by the seller during her 42 years of ownership. This early-production Mustang is being sold with service records dating back to 1975 and a clean California title.
The vehicle has received two high-quality applications of its original Poppy Red shade during the seller’s ownership. A chip is detailed in the gallery on the passenger quarter panel near the bumper. Note the original California black plates.
This Mustang was only two months old when the seller’s father acquired it used in June 1964. The exterior retains an original appearance, with factory spinner hubcaps and RoadHandler white-wall rubber.
Black vinyl seats were reupholstered by the seller, and new carpeting was added. The interior was refurbished with many additional new parts including the headliner, visors, dash pad, door panels, armrests, interior and exterior handles, window cranks, rear view mirror, center console, glove compartment, shift knob and boot, steering wheel, and Rally Pac lens covers.
An older Sony AM/FM/CD stereo was installed with Pioneer speakers that sit in the rear package shelf and Polk Marine speakers fitted in the doors. The odometer shows 26,991 miles and is said to have rolled over once.
The chassis tag is provided, and the original body and trim codes are as follows:
- 5 – 1964 1/2 and 1965
- F – Assembly Plant: Dearborn, MI
- 07 – 2 Door Hardtop
- D – 289 4V V8
- 118404 – Production Sequence
- 65A – 2 Door Hardtop, Standard Interior
- 3 – Poppy Red
- 86 – Black Crinkle Vinyl
- 22D – Date: April 22, 1964

Under the hood, the D-code 289ci V8 was good for 210 horsepower when new, with 9.0:1 compression and a four-barrel carburetor. An inspection and oil change were performed in April 2017, and the shop recommends a carburetor rebuild, front-end rebuild, and replacement of all four shocks.
Numerous undercarriage and suspension photos are viewable in the gallery below.
Service records from 1975-present are included in the sale along with original manuals. A purchase order from West Valley Ford of Santa Clara, California dated 6/20/64 shows a total price of $3,501. A walk-around video is viewable below.
