1989 Mercedes-Benz 190-Series EVOLUTION

rmcmiami.com

This 1989 Mercedes Benz 190E-16 Evolution I is one of 502 models built to homologate the car for the DTM series where it challenged the BMW M3’s.

Anthracite gray flatters the aggressive body kit and wing, and the fender flares instantly differentiate the EVO I from the standard version. Full respray done at Mercedes in Europe many years ago paint shows nicely and the fully orange rear turn signal sides are different from those on any US 190’s. These EVO 1 wheels are also an inch larger than the standard versions and have plenty of tread on the tires.

Inside the interior is very clean and the dog-leg 5-speed transmission is a signature feature. The car is fitted with 4 Recaro seats. The front seats are not powered, they come as manual optioned seats for adjust-ability. A switch on the console adjusts the suspension height. Dash is in great shape the console is fitted with 3 central gauges including a lap timer. The stereo has been upgraded to a newer CD player unit. All power windows work as well as the power sunroof. Car is equipped with factory air conditioning. In the trunk area you will find a full sized spare tire with most of the tools that came with the car from new.

The Evo I’s power output is similar to the 202 hp of the “regular” 2.5-16. However, it had a redesigned engine of similar capacity but most importantly, a shorter stroke and bigger bore which would allow for a higher rev limit and improved generation of power. Additional changes stretch to improved rotating mass, improved lubrication system along with improved cam timing. Engine makes a intoxicating induction sound. The motor pulls strong thru every gear and shifts nicely through the dog leg 5 speed manual transmission. The brakes on the Evolution models were significantly better than the type of brakes on the standard 16V models. The Evos were fitted with large four pot brakes up front to anchor the car down when pressed. The exhaust is a magnaflow exhaust and has a mid pipe catalytic converter so should be no issue to pass any emissions test thrown its way.

Factory books are included with the sale, documented full service stamps in the service book from the dealer its whole life.

It is clear that these cars are now extremely rare in the collectors cars market place. Very few, if any have returned for resale in as these cars are now clearly in the hands of long term collectors or are in personal storage. With only 502 190E Evolution 1 these cars are a true collectors Mercedes-Benz! If you are lucky enough to own one, doubt you’ll ever see another on the road
